High-Risk ObstetricsSome women need special care during pregnancy either due to a pre-existing medical
condition, a condition developed during pregnancy, genetic predispositions or
simply by carrying multiple babies. Pre-existing medical conditions that require
special monitoring include high blood pressure, diabetes, lupus and thyroid disorders.
Conditions such as gestational diabetes can develop during pregnancy, and also
need special monitoring and treatment.
The physicians and clinical staff at Highlands are highly experienced in managing
and treating symptoms of high-risk pregnancies so you can rest assured knowing
that you are in the best of hands. If you have a chronic medical condition and
are thinking of becoming pregnant, call our office at (864) 234-0700 to schedule
an appointment with one of our physicians.
Obstetric Non-Stress TestsIf you are considered a high-risk pregnancy and are in your third trimester,
your physician may recommend a non-stress test. During this test, two belts are
placed around your stomach that record both your contractions and your baby’s
heart rate and movement, and you press a button every time you feel your baby
move. This non-stress tests monitor your baby’s heartbeat to make sure your baby
is getting plenty of oxygen during the last stage of pregnancy.
At Highlands, obstetrical non-stress tests can be performed in the office. Your
doctor may also recommend this test if you have too much or too little amniotic
fluid around your baby, or if your baby is not moving as much as expected.
