Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes degeneration of bones, which can lead
to an increased risk of bone fractures in menopausal and post-menopausal women.
Although most women are diagnosed in their 50s and 60s, women of all ages need
to know their risk of developing osteoporosis and take steps to build their bone
density.
Most of a woman’s bone density is determined by the age of 30, so it is very
important for young women to get enough calcium, vitamin D and weight-bearing
exercise into their lives. Highlands physicians can offer counseling and advice
to help young women reduce their risk of developing osteoporosis.
Once a women experiences menopause, her risk for developing osteoporosis increases
dramatically. Our physicians can schedule bone density screenings to identify
where you stand in relation to your peers and to determine whether you are at
risk for a bone fracture.
